About this calculator

The mileage in a car brochure is measured under ideal, controlled conditions almost nobody drives in. Your real number, on your roads with your driving style and your air conditioning, is usually lower and far more useful. This calculator gives you that honest figure: drive a tank of fuel, note the distance and litres, and read your true mileage in km/l and mpg.

Formula explained

Mileage (km/l) = Distance ÷ Litres. To express the same efficiency as miles per gallon, multiply the km/l figure by about 2.352. The tank-to-tank (brim-to-brim) method, filling to the same point each time, gives the most reliable reading.

Worked example

450 ÷ 25 = 18 km/l, about 42.3 mpg. Repeat across several tanks for a dependable average.

Tips & notes

  • Track over at least three tanks for a stable average.
  • Brim the tank to the same point each time so the litres are comparable.
  • Smooth acceleration, correct tyre pressure and regular service all improve mileage.
