High-School GPA (Weighted)
High-school GPA with AP/IB/Honors boosting.
Formula
Weighted grade = base + difficulty boost
How to use
- 1Count your A’s and B’s separately for Regular, Honors and AP/IB classes.
- 2Enter each count.
- 3Read your weighted GPA, unweighted GPA and total classes.
About this calculator
If you have seen a GPA above 4.0 and wondered how, the answer is weighting. A weighted GPA rewards harder classes, adding points for Honors and AP or IB courses, so an A in AP Calculus counts for more than an A in a standard class. This calculator computes both your weighted and unweighted GPA from a simple count of grades.
Formula explained
Points by type - Regular: A = 4.0, B = 3.0; Honors: A = 4.5, B = 3.5; AP/IB: A = 5.0, B = 4.0. GPA = total points ÷ total classes. The unweighted GPA scores every A as 4.0 and B as 3.0 regardless of course type.
Worked example
Weighted points: 12 + 3 + 9 + 3.5 + 5 = 32.5 over 8 classes = 4.06. Unweighted: 30 ÷ 8 = 3.75. The gap is the reward for rigor.
Tips & notes
- Sort grades carefully by course type before entering them.
- Confirm your school’s specific weighting policy, since boosts vary.
- When comparing to a college’s admission range, check whether it is weighted or unweighted.
